A great opportunity to treat yourself

The Hotell Lyktan is, as the name implies, a hotel, but they've turned a number of their rooms into "hostel" accommodation. In fact, they still look a lot like double rooms in a hotel, with private shower and toilet, the only difference being that they don't supply linens and conceivably you could end up with another person in your room with you if you're alone. Myself, I'm in a beautiful, clean double room, all by myself, for 130SKr/night, or about $16.25US.

Arjeplog is out in the middle of nowhere in northern Sweden, so there isn't anything to do if you're not into outdoor activities. It's a major fishing destination in summer and skiing destination in winter, though, so if you're into "getting away from it all" but don't feel like camping, this might be the place for you. According to the Irishman who runs the pub down the street, however, the entire town is booked solid in the wintertime, as many car manufacturers use the local lakes (which freeze a couple meters deep) for their winter testing.

Myself, I took the opportunity to treat myself for a couple days. Hotell Lyktan is cheap enough that I felt I could afford to stay a couple days, and it got me out of the rain and provided me with some comfort and privacy for a couple days. Without the distractions of a big city (there are only about 3500 people in this entire district, which is the largest district in Sweden), it was the perfect opportunity to just sit back and relax and get myself organized and back on track before getting back on the road. If I wanted to just get away for a fishing holiday, this is definitely where I'd do it. The only problem, and admittedly it's a big one, is that the entirety of northern Sweden is infested with mosquitoes during the summer. Both the hotel and the Tourist Information office in Arjeplog sell mosquito repellent, which should tell you something.
