I traveled in Turkey for a couple weeks with an Australian woman whom I met in Greece. In the city of Antalya, we met some very friendly Turkish men who treated us to lunch and took us on a tour of the city and surrounds. At one point, however, one of the men asked whether the Australian woman was my girlfriend, and I replied that she was not. The Turks took this as carte blanche to prey on the poor woman. While I was out running errands, they took her for a walk in the park. They asked her things like "Do you want to have babies? You know, you could make a baby here in Turkey..." and other very forward pickup lines. She was not physically abused, but she was very uncomfortable and did not know how to get out of the situation. While it's possible that they would have left her alone had she really been assertive, it was incredibly disconcerting for her, and she left the country shortly thereafter, with an unfortunately negative impression of the place.
